Innsbruck, Salzburg or Geneva: Which Airport for a Ski Trip?
Innsbruck for the shortest transfers — over 20 resorts are within an hour, and the nearest cable car is 4.5 miles from arrivals. Geneva for the widest choice, reaching the Trois Vallées, Espace Killy, Paradiski, Portes du Soleil and the Swiss Valais within two to three hours. Salzburg sits between the two and shares Innsbruck's great advantage: it's small enough to get through quickly.
What each airport reaches
We don't hold verified transfer times for specific Salzburg resorts, so that cell is blank rather than guessed. What is documented is that Salzburg, like Innsbruck, is a small airport you clear quickly — which on a short trip is worth as much as a shorter drive.
| Airport | Notable transfer times | Serves |
|---|---|---|
| Innsbruck | Alpbach around 50 minutes; Mayrhofen around 1 hour; over 20 resorts within an hour | Kühtai, Ischgl, Söll and much of the Tyrol |
| Geneva | Chamonix around 1h 15m; Flaine around 1h 20m; most others 2–3 hours | Chamonix, Megève, Portes du Soleil, Trois Vallées, Espace Killy, Paradiski, Swiss Valais |
| Salzburg | Austrian resorts east of the Tyrol |
Why transfer time matters more than it sounds
Lift closing times in midwinter are early. A three-hour transfer on arrival day costs the first afternoon, and an early flight home costs the last morning.
On a week that's an irritation. On a long weekend it's a meaningful share of your skiing.
Innsbruck's real advantage
It isn't just the drive. It's a small airport, so the time from wheels down to being in a vehicle is short.
Combined with over 20 resorts within an hour, it's the strongest option for a short trip.
Why Geneva still wins for choice
The famous French resorts are Geneva's, and Chamonix at around 1h 15m is closer than its reputation suggests.
The trade-off is a bigger, busier airport and peak-Saturday traffic on the French side.
Where to stay near each gateway
We don't hold room prices ourselves. Each link opens an accommodation search for that destination with our booking partners, where you can see what's actually available for your dates.
We may earn a commission if you book — it never changes your price.
The verdict
Innsbruck for short trips, families and anyone who values time on snow over resort prestige.
Geneva when the resort you want is French or Swiss, and you accept a longer transfer. Salzburg for eastern Austria and for the same quick-airport advantage as Innsbruck.
We're not quoting fares to these airports on this page: our own live data holds too few offers for them to be useful, and a handful of prices would imply a market picture we don't have.
