Corfu, Crete or Rhodes: Which Greek Island for a First Trip?
Corfu is the easiest first Greek island, mainly because it's small enough that you're not committing to long drives. Crete has the longest season of anywhere in Greece, with swimming well into October and sometimes early November, but it's roughly 260km end to end — about the distance from London to Manchester — so where you stay matters more than on the other two. Rhodes sits between them: more than twice the size of Corfu, strong on history and beaches, and built for a long resort stay.
The three compared
| Corfu | Crete | Rhodes | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Relative size | Smallest of the three | Largest Greek island, ~260km east to west | More than twice the size of Corfu |
| Season length | Shorter | Longest in Greece — swimming into October, sometimes early November | Shorter |
| Landscape | Greenest island in Greece, because it's also the wettest | Varied — mountains, gorges, coast | Beaches and historic sites |
| Best suited to | Families with children under five; short transfers | Families with school-age children and up; food, history, hiking, driving | History, beaches, long resort stays |
Size is the decision nobody makes deliberately
On Crete, the island is big enough that choosing the wrong end costs you hours. Corfu's scale means the beach, the old town and the airport are all within an easy drive of most resorts.
Rhodes sits in between. For a first trip this matters more than which island is “best”.
Season length, and why Crete wins it
Crete has the longest season in Greece, with swimming well into October and sometimes into early November.
If you're tied to school holidays that's irrelevant. If you can travel in shoulder season it's the single strongest argument for Crete.
What we're seeing on fares
Here is what our own live offer data holds for the three islands on one day.
| Island | Live fares tracked | Cheapest right now |
|---|---|---|
| Corfu | 10 | £72, departing 9 September |
| Rhodes | 7 | £97, departing 9 September |
| Crete (Heraklion) | 5 | £116, departing 12 September |
All three currently show London departures only in our data, so this is not a guide to what you'd pay from a regional airport. It's a snapshot on one day, not a trend.
Which suits which family
Corfu is generally the better pick for families with children under five: smaller, shorter transfers, less time on mountain roads.
Crete suits school-age children and above, where the variety becomes an asset rather than a logistics problem. Rhodes suits anyone happy to settle into one resort.
These are tendencies rather than rules, and we'd rather say so than dress a preference up as a fact.
Where to stay on each island
We don't hold room prices ourselves. Each link opens an accommodation search for that destination with our booking partners, where you can see what's actually available for your dates.
We may earn a commission if you book — it never changes your price.
Corfu is green because it rains
Worth knowing rather than discovering. Corfu is the greenest of the Greek islands precisely because it's the wettest.
That's charming in May and less so if you've booked expecting guaranteed sun.
The verdict
Corfu for a first trip with young children, or if you want somewhere manageable.
Crete if you want the longest season and the most to do, and you'll research where on the island to stay.
Rhodes if you want history and beaches and intend to stay put.
